NPPC Leaders Discuss Pork Priorities with Ag Secretary

By Jamie Martin

NPPC board officers, including President Lori Stevermer, President-elect Duane Stateler, and Vice President Rob Brenneman, engaged in crucial discussions with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins about crucial issues concerning the pork industry.

Their discussion centered on issues facing the pork industry, notably the economic benefits of exports and challenges posed by California Proposition 12.

The meeting, which occurred just before Secretary Rollins joined President for a congressional address, highlighted the significant economic impact of pork exports and the important role they play in supporting American jobs.

On a significant Tuesday, NPPC board officers, including President Lori Stevermer, President-elect Duane Stateler, and Vice President Rob Brenneman, convened with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins.

Highlighting the crucial statistics, the officers explained that pork exports substantially bolster the U.S. economy by adding over $66 to the average value of each hog marketed and supporting more than 140,000 American jobs. They advocated for Secretary Rollins to press for legislative remedies to the impediments caused by Proposition 12, echoing her prior commitments during her confirmation hearing.

The trio briefed Secretary Rollins on proactive measures against foreign animal diseases like African swine fever. Their comprehensive approach includes supporting the funding of essential programs such as the National Animal Health Laboratory Network and the National Animal Disease Preparedness and Response Program.

Their timely discussion precedes Secretary Rollins' involvement with the upcoming five-year Farm Bill, a critical element for shaping the future of agricultural policies. The outcomes of this meeting are set to influence not only the pork industry but also broader agricultural practices under USDA’s stewardship.
