SHIC Launches 2025 Research Initiative for Swine Health

By Jamie Martin

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) has unveiled its 2025 Plan of Work Research Program, committing $1.5 million to support research that tackles crucial swine health challenges. This initiative is designed to boost disease resilience and ensure the sustainability of the pork industry in the United States.

Funded projects will focus on five strategic priorities: enhancing swine health information systems, improving disease monitoring and mitigation, responding to emerging diseases, advancing surveillance and discovery, and refining swine disease matrices. This comprehensive approach aims to equip pork producers with the tools necessary to effectively manage and prevent diseases in their herds.

SHIC's funding opportunity invites researchers to submit proposals that align with these priorities, offering grants ranging from $50,000 to $150,000. Proposals expected to exceed this range must provide strong justification based on the potential impact on the U.S. pork industry.

"Collaborative projects that include industry, academia, and public/private partnerships are highly encouraged," stated a SHIC spokesperson. These collaborations are crucial in driving innovations that can significantly improve swine health management practices.

The Plan of Work for 2025 reflects SHIC’s proactive stance against emerging swine diseases, emphasizing the importance of strategic research investments. By addressing these critical health issues, SHIC supports the industry’s need for sustainable practices and enhanced preparedness against disease threats.
